#3 A picture of your pet



This is Pepper or Mr. Pepper if you are the more formal kind. He is my little pupper. I have had him for about a week now. I had gone away for the weekend to Shimla and came back to find him sitting on my bed fighting with the pillows. It was a gift from my brother to himself! 
He is a tiny two months old German Shepherd with the sharpest teeth you've ever seen. He will bite any and everything he can reach but his chew toys. He is one smart dog, who has realized if he tilts his head and coos a little, I melt down like an ice-cream on a hot Delhi day. He will bark his tail off if you ignore him one bit. He is the cutest cuddliest little doggo ever.

So, after one full year, which now seems to have gone by very quickly, I sit here thinking about it. This one year has changed everything. I still remember the very first day when I stood at the gate and looked at my college, my home for the next four years. It was nothing I had imagined it to be. Rather, from the first look, it seemed pretty bad, and I thought to myself, "How will I do it?" But then, as I took a closer look, it did not seem so bad. So what if the roofs had moss all over them, and what if my room was in the extreme corner? It was my world now, and I had to make the best of it. I met a lot of people and made a lot of friends—some lasted only for a week or so, and some are still beside me, partners in crime. I am very much a family person. I love my family. I love my immediate family to death, but I also love parts of my extended family. Not that all of us are great, or characters straight out of the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain. We bitch, we gossip, we do panchayat, we take offence, we give offence — the whole nine yards. But somehow, we still manage to be nice to each other. We still manage to love each other through all the lies and backstabbing. We fight over petty things, but we also forgive easily — well, most of us. And we’ve had big fights. Fights where it felt impossible to come back from, and guess what? We came back. "Trust is like a mirror, you can fix it if it's broken, but you can still see the crack in the reflection" Trust is something extremely delicate. It takes years to build and just a second to break. It is flimsier than a soap bubble. Just one prick and everything is gone, just like that. People say heart break is tough and devastating, but I feel it is comparatively easy to recover from, but if someone's trust breaks it is almost impossible to rebuild. Its like that one tiny crack that just keeps leaking no matter what you try to do about it. Plaster it, tape it or cement it, nothings works. It might stop leaking for a while but you know it is bound to come back.  You might try all you want, try to put things behind you, have a clean slate, turn over a new leaf, but that little smidge of doubt does not go away, it is always there. It's been a really long time. I have a decent reason for it. You see I can't write just like that, I need to be inspired, I need something to get me thinking. I need the oblivion. And this time, my new phone got me thinking. These days half our lives are on our gadgets. Our contacts, photos, messages etc. We have all of that stored on our laptops and phones. What if one day you were to wake up and all of that was to go away. In one instant all of your data just vanished. Any normal person would go crazy and that is the expected reaction. After all, his life was on there. Something like this recently happened to me. Something was wrong with my phone and I got it replaced. I tried to take a backup on my laptop but being technologically impaired things did not work out properly and I lost all my data! All my photos all my messages, contacts, notes everything. Book Review | Yellowface | Obscurity to Overnight Success: But for How Long?

Bite-sized Review:   Yellowface, picked up on my brother's recommendation, initially lingered untouched on my table. The narrative follows Athena and June, writers tethered by an unusual connection. As June gains success riding on her "best" friend's demise, the book explores themes of ownership and plagiarism. Despite a slower pace after 200 pages, it remains a riveting tale that unexpectedly jolts, leaving you intrigued. A compelling and engaging read. Full Review: I picked up Yellowface on my brother's recommendations.  Purchasing it on instinct during a shopping excursion with my childhood friend, the book rested on my table for several days, patiently awaiting attention.  I somehow did not feel like picking it up. Oxford dictionary defines discrimination as  "The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people" Since we were kids we all have been reading about discrimination prevailing in the world. It took different forms through different times and ages. It was against the blacks in America, lower casts in India or the Jews in Europe and women all across the world. And in retrospect, this has always come to a bad end, where we eventually realize our mistakes and have to correct them.  You will see that discrimination still persists in our society but on a much smaller scale than before. I would attribute this to the rise in education levels and increase in sensitivity in people and rules put in place to ensure this does not happen.  As a child, I had always only read about different kinds of discrimination so never really got the concept. There is a very famous quote, "Time Heals" but time also changes. As time goes on you might not realize but every second that goes by has an effect on us and changes us, our perspective, our thoughts, our personality. For me these last two year have changed me tremendously. Two years ago when I walked through the gates of BITS Pilani Goa Campus I was a very different person. A nervous, shy, humble and idealistic girl had walked in, who hadn't seen the world. And today when I look back, these last two years have changed me a lot. But for the most part I'm still the same. Sometime when you are free (mostly happens with me during exams), open your chat on facebook and scroll down to almost the bottom. And start reading up. Open random chats and just start reading. Within the first ten minutes a wave of nostalgia is going to hit you hard and will drag you back. It will take you back to some other time and will get you thinking. And while all of this is going on, there will be one tiny voice inside your head asking if you regret any of it. This will make you think about the changes that have taken place over time. You will realize that even the tiniest of things can cause a change. A text you had been meaning to send, a call you had to return,or something just as insignificant.   All of our actions and decisions pile up over time and result in what our life is today.
