Finding Inspiration at Home

I had been searching fervently for someone who could truly inspire me. Perhaps Michelle Obama? A formidable, self-assured, independent, and empathetic woman who transcended her role as the First Lady, crafting an identity beyond her duties as the wife of the President of the United States. Unfortunately, that didn't resonate with me.

Um, maybe Jubin Mehta, a writer immersed in technology and the startup landscape, simultaneously imparting knowledge to children at a school in the Himalayas, where he resides.

Despite admiring many individuals, none have truly sparked inspiration within me. You know who consistently has been my guide for the majority of my existence? My brother. That's right.

His ideals, principles, musical taste, perspectives, and motivations are a wellspring of inspiration for me. I aspire to shape a life for myself akin to the one he has cultivated.

Just a few days ago, feeling disheartened by blatant unfair treatment at work and contemplating quitting in a fit of rage, he shared some wisdom with me. He said, "Aru, we don't engage in meaningful work solely for recognition or appreciation, although those are valuable. Nor do we do it solely for the company, manager, or colleague we may like. We do good work for ourselves. We do it to learn and grow. We do it because not doing so would be ethically wrong. If we are willing to give up the moment we don't see a reward, then our motivation is flawed and corrupt, and it needs to change. So stay as long as you want, but while you're here, keep giving your best for yourself."

His words hit me profoundly. How right he was, weaving discussions about ethics in a world seemingly consumed by shallowness and cruelty. Okay, now I'm slipping into song lyrics. But yes, my brother is my inspiration for nearly everything in life. He has been, is, and will always be my guiding post.

Happy Rakhi, you idiot!
